Who needs a GUI when writing a report?

The last few weeks I have been quite busy since I started with my master. They keep me quite busy and have me write a lot of reports, summaries etc.

Now this is not a problem (latex is your friend) but when there is the need to plot data I always used to switch to some GUI program to plot the graph. That was until last Monday when Roy gave me a quick introduction to GNUplot, and I must say I absolutely love it. It is very easy to deal with. Has tons of options to configure the graph exactly the way you want it. And last but certainly not least it allows me to export the graph as vector graphics. This last part is freaking awesome since then I can keep on zooming in my report (the power of vectors!!!, we need a logo for that or something).

Now I know there are a lot of other plotting programs out their but this one is so power full in its simplicity. However GNUplot does not allow me to create graphs (with nodes and edges). But for this I recently discovered using GraphViz with the extremely simple dot language. This even allows me to in a very simple and fast way construct Finite Automatons without ever having to draw a node myself. I can draw my automaton in less than 1 minute using just 20 lines of code. While drawing it in inkscape or Dia takes me a hell of a lot longer!

So I guess right now I can write most of my reports without a GUI tool. Just vim, GNUplot and graphviz. You should try them…. and love them…

So I’m back at the university. Nice to see all the people again. So not that bad. Now we got a course Natural Language Processing and I was told it was best to do it in python. I never coded in python before so did not really know what to expect. I started coding and it was actually quite easy. It works nice and is surprisingly fast. However (and I know I am not the only one) why am I not allowed to use my friends { and }…. I like them. Now I know I have to indent etc. I already do that. But I like to use them just in case…

Ah well I think I can learn to live with it. But still… Would be nice if they gave me the choice to use it…

Long time

I has been quite some time since my last post. So here is an update on what has happend in 2.5 weeks. First of all my midterms Well they were a bitch. Failed at least one so lets hope next time things go better. More about school I have 3 weeks left now and am in the middle of a project Parallel and Distributed Applications. The idea is nice but man to get that MPI to do with I want is a real pain in the ass.. But well you can do nice stuff with it. It is to bad I haven’t found any nice application to run at home because the idea of parallel programming is nice.

Now some nice things. I got a Nintendo Wii. Well my girlfriend got me it. Man i love that thing. Wii Sports and Wii Play are awesome and it fun to play a little game of tennis or baseball together. Nintendo really did a great job. But well the best game I played so far is Zelda. Now i have to add that ever since the first time a played Zelda I was hooked. But so far this is again a great Zelda adventure. More on this as I procede in the game

Now installing the Wii was a piece of cake. Connecting all the wires and it worked. I started the Wii and got lead trough the introduction screen with some personal settings etc. And after that setting up the wifi. This was the part where i was afraid of since the wifi I have is WPA2. But it was done in a second. And my wii is connected to the internet. I however do not (yet) use the internet much because i do not really like to use the on screen keyboard. But when i have a spare USB keyboard I’ll use it more i think. Now I’m waiting for Nintendo to create an RSS reader for the Wii so I can keep up to date.

Ah well I just love my new toy

Vacation

So i just finished my last midterm. This week did not go as well as expected. First midterm was cancelled. Well we were waiting outside the classroom and no teacher showed up. Turned out that the one that was supposed to sit there with us was told it was fryday. Ah well. It is done now and lets hope for the best. Now it is time to relax. Have a lot of fun during the hollydays. And just relax. Which generally means you’ll all be hearing a lot form me i guess

School eats up all my time….

Not that i care if that means drinking bear with friends or working on a cool project. But no. Well i should not lie. Graphics is actally a cool thing. Not that I’m the artistic one. But that is some nice coding. Takes some time but at least i know what to do. Can think about different things and approaches. Keeps me off the street. But Operation Systems. Damn it is a bitch!! Weird assignments, i do not have a clue what to do. And it gets worse the assignment is more about statistics than coding or analyzing. Come on if i wanted to do statistics i would not have chosen computer science.
Ah well so you see school keeps me busy. Seems i need to do more during the week

It happens every year… A first schoolday, that is if you go to school, and today was my first day again.. A well it was nice the university was still standing and my study colleges were still alive. So from now on i’ll have homework again. Wich i’ll hopfully have done in time so i can work on my various projects more

Yeah. I’ve finished highschool. Got a call this morning telling me that it is all done. Anyway no grades yet but ofcourse i’ll let u know. But now it is time to call the family. I’ll post more later on today. Or tomorrow because i do not know if i’ll be sober enough to type this afternoon.

Party night June 16

Here in holland on the 17th of June, VWO students get the grades for there exams. And by that will know if they passed high school. Around 11 am they’ll call us with the results so i was thinking of having a huge party so we’ll all sleep till the phone rings.

So i was thinking about a nice bbq. (if the weather allows it) Or just hanging out together. With a nice glass of something. And just have fun. Maybe run around a lil. Or just talk.

Ofcrouse we could also stalk teachers. But i do not think that will be good for the meeting
